Tyneside Vagabonds won the team prize in the N&D CA 50 as Craig took the club 50 mile championship from Howard in second and Paul in third place.
The club 50 mile championship is run in conjunction with the Northumberland and Durham Cycling Association open 50 mile time trial. This event is organised by one of the Vagabond members, Paul. This year a small field was down to ride of 19 riders, 3 from the club. Normally we have five to six club members taking part.
The forecast said that it would be dry at 6.00am but rain at 9.00am. On the way to the start the rain started at 5.45am!!! so much of the weather forecast. However despite competitors getting rained on when putting the bikes together before the start at Seaton Burn the weather quickly improved to give a dry day for racing. The wind picked up and gave a hard ride on the return legs. I say legs as the riders were competing two laps of a 25mile course that runs from Bassington to Ellington and back. The climb at the end of lap one up to Bassington is particularly cruel for a standard distance race.
The club riders had some welcome vocal support from Roger who had chosen to marshal rather than ride this year. At 30 miles, Craig had just caught Howard for 2 minutes, whilst both had closed in on Paul who had started a few minutes in front of them.
The event was won by Jon Sturman of the Derwentside CC, with a 1:53:56 giving him a 6½ minute advantage over second place! The club championship was won by Craig, from Howard and Paul. The Vagabonds claimed the team prize by over 18 minutes from Barnesbury C.C. The N&DCA has one 50 and a 100 left so its looking good for the Vagabonds to retain overall N&DCA team BAR.
